Divine Mercy Girls Seminary History
There is an urgent need to educate and empower girls in Tanzania, a country that is primarily agricultural. Many girls from rural areas are unable to continue their education beyond elementary school because secondary schools are located mainly in cities and lack safe boarding accommodations.
In response to this critical need, the Sisters of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus founded the Divine Mercy Girls Seminary (DMGS) in 2014. DMGS is a Catholic secondary boarding school for girls located in Bukoba, Tanzania. Currently, 175 students between the ages of 11 and 17 are enrolled. Students at DMGS are free to discern their vocational path, whether to religious life as a St. Thérèse Sister or to a non-religious vocation.
Young African girls are the hope for the future of their families and communities—as loving mothers, faithful leaders, and agents of positive change. Empowering young women through education and spiritual formation has been proven to help break the cycle of poverty in Africa and to build stronger, faith-filled communities for generations to come.
